More Humanity, Less Ego

By Rt. Hon. Temidayo Friday

Speaker, ESAN–AFUED Faculty Parliament (2024/2025 Academic Session)

In a world where everyone wants to be right, few truly want to understand. Where everyone seeks recognition, few genuinely seek connection. Yet, the strength of any community or leadership lies not in ego or titles, but in humanity and humility.

As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” True leadership is not about how many people salute you, but how many hearts you touch through your actions.

Too often, we wear titles like crowns but forget that leadership is service, not showmanship. A leader’s greatness is not measured by authority but by the ability to bring people together in peace, understanding, and respect.

Take, for example, Nelson Mandela, who chose forgiveness over revenge even after 27 years in prison. His humility didn’t make him weak, it made him powerful enough to unite a divided nation. Likewise, Mother Teresa had no political position or worldly wealth, yet her compassion and humanity impacted millions more than many who held power ever could.

In our Faculty of Education, we are being molded as future nation builders, teachers, counselors, mentors, and leaders. The kind of change we dream of begins with how we treat one another. A kind word, a patient ear, or a simple act of respect can heal more than a thousand speeches ever could.

Let’s learn to lead with empathy and not with pride. Let’s choose understanding over argument, and compassion over competition. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?”

Ego creates distance, but empathy builds bridges. Pride fades away, but humanity leaves a lasting legacy.

So, let us rise above self and embrace service not because it is easy, but because it is right. Let us remember that one day, our positions will end, but the love, respect, and impact we leave behind will live forever.

As members of the Education Students’ Association of Nigeria (ESAN–AFUED), may we keep leading with love, serving with sincerity, and building a faculty where every voice matters and every soul feels valued.
